Prof. Ivan Katavić, Ph.D. Fisheries biologist, senior resarcher at the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, Split, Croatia, and Head of its Laboratory for Aquaculture. His research interests lie mainly in fisheries and aquaculture related fields with emphasis on new species in aquaculture and possible effects of aquaculture on aquatic ecosystem. He served as a Deputy Minister for Fisheries, a team leader and negotiator responsible for the Chapter 13 (Fisheries) through accession of Croatia to the EU.

He coordinated a regional network dealing with Environmental Aspect of Mediterranean Aquaculture as UNEP/MAP priority actions (PAP/RAC), and headed numerous UNEP/FAO missions all along Mediterranean coastal region. He was also appointed as a vice Chair to GFCM for two mandate, and served as a national representative for Croatia to a series of regional fisheries and aquaculture organisations (ICCAT, FAO, GFCM, UNEP/MAP…).

He has organized and headed several international project such as “Integrated coastal area management focusing aquaculture (ICAM)”, “Demersal Fisheries Monitoring Program (DEMON)” “Freshwater Monitoring on Bordering Rivers - Danube and Sava” in cooperation with Kingdom of Norway etc. Most recently was acting as a coordinator and project leader for several research activities relevant to ICCAT- SCRS mandate.  In addition to the research activities, he is actively involved in permanent teaching, and providing mentorship to diploma and doctorate students.

Prof. Sanja Matić-Skoko, Ph.D. Marine biologist, Senior researcher at the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (IOF), Split, Croatia, and President of IOF Scientific Board, associate in Laboratory of Ichthyology and Coastal Fisheries. Her main research interests are related to fish biology and ecology, fish aging, population dynamics and stock assessment, costal fisheries management and biodiversity conservation, particularly effectiveness of MPAs regulations, assessment of coastal fish communities due anthropogenic pressures, mainly fisheries and climatic changes, connectivity of estuarine and coastal fish nurseries through otolith geochemical fingerprints and sclerochronology.

She is conducting a number of scientific projects and monitoring studies on fish biology, coastal fisheries and assessment of current measures effectiveness in the Adriatic Sea. She is member of the National Advisory Council for fisheries (passive gears); member of the working group for the development of national Management Plans for active fishing gears, national expert in ESF (European Scientific Foundation) & COST Working group related to SSF fisheries; national expert for TW MED GIG, etc.

She organized several AdriaMed (FAO) meetings on Adriatic Sea Small-Scale Fisheries and International symposium on Fishes of the Adriatic Sea and eastern Mediterranean Sea on the XII ECI. Currently she is project leader and associate on several EU, bilateral and national projects and monitoring programs. She is also Associate editor for Acta Ichthyologica and Piscatoria and Subject editor for Marine Biology Research journals.  In addition, she is actively involved in teaching, she was head of Marine Biology and Ecology study (University of Split: 2007-2012) and providing mentorship to diploma and doctorate students.

Prof. Milorad Mrakovčić PhD. Professor at the University of Zagreb, Department of Biology - Zoology, with his work on the Biodiversity of Flora, Fauna and Endangered Species, and on the status, threats and management of freshwater fishes.

Technical Workshop Speaker:

David McKenzie

4os

David McKenzie. Research Director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), in the mixed research unit 'Centre for Marine Biodiversity, Conservation and Exploitation', located on the campus of the University of Montpellier. He did a PhD at the University of British Columbia (1990) and since has worked throughout Europe. His research field is the respiratory physiology of fishes, in particular as related to energy metabolism, from basic mechanisms (how fishes sense oxygen and optimise uptake and delivery), to applications in ecophysiology (complex traits of respiratory metabolism as biomarkers of environmental adaptation), to evolutionary physiology (why the traits vary among individuals, how they might co-vary with other traits of energetics or personality). He is also interested in applications in conservation and aquaculture, how environmental conditions influence energy metabolism and cardiorespiratory performance. Finally, he is interested in evolutionary physiology, in particular the trade-offs that maintain individual variation in complex traits such as metabolic rate or swimming performance.
